Nov 21, 2024 11:32 AM

On November 20, JISU’s 6th Chinese and International Students Poetry Recitation Competition was held in the auditorium of the Shiqiao Building. Twenty-nine Chinese and international students passionately recited classic and contemporary literary works in 21 different languages. Nearly a thousand faculty members and students attended the event.

The Competition is one of the series of JISU’s 11th Reading Festival. It aims to spread and promote classic Chinese and foreign cultures, allowing students to experience culture through language learning and strengthen language skills in culture. By reading, students can absorb the essence of world cultures, enhance their language skills, cultural appreciation, and aesthetic abilities, promote academic atmosphere, and create a scholarly campus. The competition, organized by the library and the Jilin Provincial Language and Writing Center, lasted for over two months and received strong support from JISU’s Publicity Department, Student Affairs Office, Youth League Committee, and various schools. Participating students prepared earnestly, and performed meticulously, deeply interpreting the essence of the works.

After intense competition, Liu Shize from the School of International Arts and Nguyen Thi Thoa, a Vietnamese student from the School of International Communication, and Mingzhu, a Russian student from the School of International Exchange, won first prize. Sun Linxin from the School of Education, Li Jiawen from the School of International Culture and Tourism, Fu Yutong from the School of International Communication, and Chen Feifei from the School of Oriental Languages, won the second prize. Shi Yang from the School of Central and Eastern European Languages, Chen Shenshen from the School of Oriental Languages, Song Yangyang and Zhou Tongyu from the School of Oriental Languages, and He Yinzi, Xu Shuo, Jing Lu, and others from the Graduate School of Translation and Interpreting, who recited “China Under the Moonlight” in seven languages including English, French, Arabic, and Italian, along with Xu Tianjiao from the School of Marxism, who recited “Youth,” won third prize.

The competition left a deep impression on the participants. Nguyen Thi Thoa, the Vietnamese student who recited “To the Oak Tree,” remarked that through the competition, she gained a deeper understanding of the poem’s meaning and the author’s emotions. She learned to master the techniques of using tone, intonation, and rhythm to express emotions, bringing warmth to the words through recitation. She described the experience as an unforgettable journey of personal growth. Shi Yang from the School of Central and Eastern European Languages stated that participating in the competition was not only a tribute to classic poetry but also an exploration of the charm of language. He hopes to convey the power of poetry through recitation and make greater progress in language learning and literary research.
