On September 19, a delegation of 13 diplomats and foreign affairs officials from Cape Verde visited Jilin International Studies University (JISU) for an exchange. Vice President of JISU, Wang Zhiguo, Zhang Xiaolin, Executive Dean of the School of Western Languages, Song Dandan, Director of the Office of International Exchange and Cooperation and Dean of the School of International Exchange, along with representatives from relevant departments, received the guests.
The Cape Verdean diplomats were participants of “Training Program for Cape Verdean Diplomats and Civil Servants in Charge of Foreign Affairs,” organized by the Beijing International Chinese College under China’s foreign aid training initiatives. JISU played a role in organizing the delegation’s four-day inspection and visit activities in Changchun, with Portuguese language students serving as accompanying interpreters. This collaboration marks another joint effort following the establishment of a practice base between JISU and Beijing International Chinese College.
At JISU, the diplomats toured the library, Global Village, and International Exchange Center. They highly praised the school’s dedication to creating an internationalized educational environment and its commitment to the educational philosophy of “student-centeredness, responsible education.” A symposium between the Cape Verdean diplomats and faculty and students of the Portuguese language program was held in the Global Village. The diplomats gained a detailed understanding of the development of the Portuguese language program and engaged in interactive exchanges with students, commending their foreign language proficiency and cross-cultural communication skills. The students said that the face-to-face interaction with the diplomats broadened their international perspectives, further ignited their passion for language learning, and strengthened their determination to tell China’s stories and promote Chinese culture to the world.
Following the symposium, the school leaders engaged in in-depth discussions with the delegation of diplomats. In addition to touring the campus, the Cape Verdean diplomats visited representative enterprises and institutions, including the Changchun Film Studio Museum, iFLYTEK, and Chenjiadian Village in Helong Town, Nong’an County. Two Portuguese language students served as accompanying translators during these visits.
Since 2020, Jilin International Studies University has collaborated with Beijing International Chinese College to establish a practice base. Nearly 30 students from the School of Western Languages and the Graduate School of Translation and Interpreting have participated as interns, actively contributing to the reception of diplomatic delegations and foreign guests. Their foreign language expertise and outstanding performance have earned high praise from the visitors. This event has deepened the cooperative relationship between Jilin International Studies University and Beijing International Chinese College, enhanced exchanges and collaboration with institutions in the Republic of Cape Verde and other Portuguese-speaking countries, and created favorable conditions for expanding international exchange opportunities, building a hub for international communication, and advancing the JISU’s internationalization efforts.
