It’s our duty to obey the health safety orders during the COVID-19 pandemic. During this unusual period of time, over 130 students of JISU have volunteered to offer their services to fight the pandemic in about 30 counties of 6 provinces in China. On March 5th, “Learn from Lei Feng Day”, they continued to give their time and use their skills to help the cause with great optimism, fully embodying the spirit of Lei Feng that this day represents.

Zhao Hongyang, a junior student majoring in Korean

A Chinese International Student Volunteer, International Exchange Department, Pukyong National University

Zhao participated in a JISU international exchange program and went to Pukyong National University, South Korea, to study for one year at the end of August, 2019. He cherished this valuable opportunity so much that he intended to take a part-time job during winter vacation to experience something new. However, the outbreak of COVID-19 forced him to leave his job early.

There are plenty of Chinese students studying in Pukyong National University. Seeing that Korean teachers were busy with how to receive Chinese students back to school and how to help them settle down, Zhao Hongyang volunteered to join the Chinese Students Service Team of the International Exchange Department on February 11th. Every day he contacted Chinese students who planned to return to South Korea recently and confirmed their flight information to arrange pickups at the airport. As for some students who cancelled their tickets or applied for suspension, he registered them and answered their questions. He diligently stayed in contact with all of the students, and although sometimes he was quite busy, helping others brought him great joy.

Zhao Hongyang says firmly, “Currently my counselor communicates with me every day and my families and friends continuously support me. I will take protective measures every day and strive to serve more Chinese students. Although the COVID-19 pandemic is getting more and more severe, I am not scared as I am supported by my loved ones, JISU, and even China itself. After going abroad, I have realized that China has my back and I believe the Chinese people and the whole world will eventually win this fight.

Guo Lu, a second year postgraduate majoring in Japanese and Korean bilingual translation

A Volunteer from Luoyang Town, Suizhou City, Hubei Province

After the online class, Guo Lu came to the key traffic crossing-- Yucai Lane Defensive Blockade on March 5th. In order to meet the requirement of “Taking Strict Precautions” by the Luoyang Town Pandemic Prevention Headquarters, he and other staff are on duty day and night, checking vehicles and taking the temperatures of passengers and drivers. In his opinion, social volunteer services provide a platform for him to grow both intellectually and personally.

Guo Lu said: “I’m very worried when I saw lots of people infected with COVID-19 due to the fierce outbreak of the pandemic. As a young man as well as an activist of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), I am obliged to go to the hardest places, give my greatest effort and contribute my strength to my hometown.” During this period, he submitted another application to join the CCP.

On March 1st, he transferred to the Beijing Street Community,Kuancheng District, Changchun City, where he assisted the community staff and checkedthe health of people leaving and entering.

He commented: “I’ve been a volunteer during my time at college, so doing this type of thing is not new to me. Besides, as a communist party member, I should do my best to assist in the COVID-19 prevention and controlefforts. When the country needs us, the youth should courageously shoulder their duties. I want to be one of these people and serve others around me.”

Since its founding, JISU has promoted a spirit of selflessness, a so-called “charity spirit” that has become a cornerstone of JISU. The university itself established the Young Volunteers Federation and has incorporated “volunteer service” into undergraduate professional training programs. Nowadays, this spirit has become mark of JISU as it gives great importance to fostering students’ sense of social responsibility. And as a result, numerous JISU studentshave willingly stepped out to serve on the frontline of this fight against COVID-19. They truly do carry forward “Lei Feng spirit” into this new era.
